The 2-Iron I Never Saw Again

It’s B. Olsen — always tinkering with new equipment.

This time, I borrow his 2-iron. He’s got the Tiger Woods orange shaft installed, paired with Bryson’s JumboMax grips.

The point of those oversized grips is to take out excess hand movement, especially on the takeaway. And it can work.

Remember — as beginners we’re trying to conquer three parts at once: intention or instinct, mechanics, and equipment.

Most beginners play grip sizes that are too small. Always go one bigger and adjust from there. I use a midsize +4 myself, but I can hit any size — even the JumboMax.

Stock grips on new sets are usually too small.

When I play JumboMax, my chest turns with my hands. It’s tough for them to work independently. But I don’t always want that.

The shaft in Olsen’s club is the same model Tiger put in many of his woods — graphite, tipped differently to change the flex. Steel is more consistent, but it doesn’t whip the same, which is why you don’t see it in woods anymore.

I asked Olsen, “Think I can hit your 2-iron high — over that tree?”

I’d already used it off the tee earlier.

Once I cleared the tree, he said, “Give me that back.”

And that was the last I ever saw of that club.
